Our History

The lady of the hour? Meet Harriet. In a time when women could not vote or get an education, she beat all odds to follow her dreams and turned the family watchmakers into a mail-order business, with one goal: to make quality jewellery and watches accessible to everyone. Today, our style team follows in her footsteps, scouring for tips, tricks, hacks and stacks and delivering style with a smile every single day.

In 1862, Harriet took over a silversmithing and clock-making business from her father-in-law Moses, and renamed it H. Samuel. She moved it from Liverpool to Market Street, Manchester and ran it as a mail-order business. In 1890, the first H. Samuel stores opened in Preston and Rochdale. In 1912, with both mail order and retail thriving, the business moved to a larger site in Birmingham to keep up with demand - the site we occupy, to this day.

From modest beginnings in 1949, Ernest Jones has grown from a single store in London’s Oxford Street to a highly reputable national chain of 100+ jewellery stores - bringing to suburban and provincial locations the quality, range, presentation and high standard of customer service once only available in London’s West End. Ernest Jones is now firmly established as the UK’s diamond and watch specialist.

Charitable Giving
We are incredibly proud of our national charitable partnerships here at Signet.

In the UK, Signet are honoured to help Young Lives vs Cancer. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it threatens everything, for them and their family. At a time when they should be busy being children, enjoying their rollercoaster teenage years or finding their feet at university, life becomes full of fear. Not only fear of treatment, but of families being torn apart; of overwhelming money worries; mental health stretched to breaking point; of having nowhere to turn and no one to talk to.

Young Lives vs Cancer get that. They are the charity that helps children and young people (aged 0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. They know everyone’s different, so they work hard to make sure each family has what they need to get through cancer. It could be a financial grant for a parent, who is struggling to keep their child warm through their treatment; or for a young person, who can’t afford to get to hospital; or helping a family stay together at one of their free "Homes from Home", close to the hospital where their child is having treatment.

Since our partnership with Young Lives vs Cancer began in 2014, through the sale of nearly 90,000 bears and the amazing fundraising efforts of our team members, we have raised over £1.4 million for the charity.

We also help children and their families facing life-changing illnesses, through our partnership with Barretstown in Ireland. Barretstown provides free camps and programmes- specifically designed to support children with a serious illness, and their families; along with 24-hour on-site medical and nursing care. This gives children a chance to enjoy experiences shared by their peers, while still ensuring they receive the treatment and support they need.

Since the beginning of our partnership with Barretstown, our amazing store teams have raised just over £60,000 and sold more than 3,000 bears.  www.barretstown.org
